Daniel Calvert has always had a passion for vehicles. His dream was to own his own automotive shop one day. It all started at the age of ten by observing his father changing the oil in their vehicles. One time his father was doing a tune-up on the family car and he couldn’t remember how to repair it. Dan realized his father put the wrong wire on the distributor. Dan corrected it and was able to get the vehicle running again.
Dan’s first job after attending tech school was working at a 2 bay old gas station. Shortly after, he went to work at Firestone as a “C” technician. Dan was able to get some ASE certifications. He gained more knowledge which moved him up to a “B” technician. Dan was featured in the Undercar Digest Magazine because people recognized his good quality of work. He was using a new piece of equipment for exhaust work. Dan was a technician for about twenty years.
Dan liked to interact with customers, so he decided to try management. It all started with Midas, where he was featured in the Midas Matter newspaper. A customer sent a letter explaining how Dan went above and beyond to make his experience the best it could be. He recognized the importance of the problem and made sure it was fixed in a timely manner. Dan learned what customer service means to a business. Overall, he managed four shops.
Story Highlights
- After having the experience of technician and management, Dan was ready for another challenge. On June 2, 2010 Dan decided to become partners with his brother, Gary Calvert, in an automotive shop. They opened up Calvert’s Express Auto Service and Tire in Rock Hill.
- On August 12, 2013 Dan decided to buy the first franchise of ‘Calvert’s Express’. He learned the concepts of owning a shop and developed many relationships with his customers. However, Dan wanted another challenge.
- Finally, after nearly 30 years of the automotive industry, Dan pursued his dream and opened up his own automotive shop on January 2, 2019. He decided to call it Dan’s Auto Service and Tire because his customers always give him referrals as “take it to Dan.” Dan now devotes the majority of his time to building his own business.
